I'm finally on GameTap and able to experience all that it has to offer. The main reason why I wanted to get on it?

...Awww yea.

The game has aged pretty well, and the version on GameTap is the version with D3D and textures on the terrain. Sadly, it's locked at 640x480, but after playing for a few minutes it won't bother you none. The game is still incredibly fun to play a decade after it came out, though there's a few little things you should be aware of going in:

1) Driving with the keyboard may not seem like a good idea, but it works out great. Use the numpad to steer, hit the arrow keys with your thumb to look around, and use your left hand to fire weapons (either 1 - 5 or hit spacebar to fire your active weapon), hit the e-brake (z), and target enemies (t). There's other functions available (quite a few), but if you can get that down then you'll be just fine.

2) No mid-mission saving; death during a mission results in the need to reaccomplish all of the objectives.

3) Jumping off ramps is hit or miss but you'll need to learn how to do it. Thankfully after the 6th or 7th mission then the jumps become a hell of a lot easier.

4) Turret-based weapons have the potential to completely unbalance the game. Load up a 7.62mm turret and you will mow down every mother fucker in the desert. It's so wonderfully joyous!

5) No multiplayer :(

...but god DAMN is it still a hell of a fun game to play. There were some pretty intense fights in there, such as one time when my tires were all completely shot out and I was rolling on flats but still managed to get rid of the crooked cops that were hunting us down...or the time when I had to defend the gas station, lost both of my main weapons, and had to abuse the AI's flaws to kill the last three enemies with just my .45 handgun.

The video compression didn't seem as bad as I recall it being and they did a nice job crushing everything down to a little over 750 megs (yay for decent audio compression advancements in the last 10 years). There's some technical quirks here and there with some stuff being engine related (disappearing polygons and whatnot) while others are just little random oddities (such as the ammo count only being updated when the music loops). Nothing at all that'd get in the way of a damn fun time blowing up cars in the southwest US.

You know what's even cooler?

Awwwwww yea.

Let's just hope this means good things for the chances of Mechwarrior 2, Mechwarrior Mercenaries, and Mechwarrior 2 Ghost Bear's Legacy getting on GameTap at some point. Oh GameTap, I love yooooooooooooou.

I tried to sign up for GameTap not too long ago, but they wouldn't let me. Seems like it's USA-only or something. :(

I'm guessing it was because of the refresh rate of my monitor, but I got some insane tearing with Toy Commander while Chu Chu Rocket works a lot better. Whenever the next update rolls out that allows custom refresh rates, I'll give it another go.
