Star Trek: Encounters

What a nice bargain bin surprise this little title is. It's a pretty straightforward outer space top down 360 degree shooter (Armada, Subspace, Solar Winds, Zone 66, etc) with multisegmented but straightforward missions (fly to this point, defeat these enemies, escort this ship back, destory this minefield, etc) taking place in each of the Star Trek universes, allowing you to play as the major Starfleet ships and crews in each era. Also neat is how each series in the campaign is set up in chronological order, starting with the NX-01 and moving on through the different series.

Combat and movement are slick and intuitive. The left analog stick steers the ship while the right stick controls the direction of the sensors and targeting cone. L1 and L2 move the ship up and down to the higher and lower planes (you have to hold them; they aren't toggle buttons) so that you can fly over and under hazards and other ships (great for avoiding mine fields :)). R1 is your fire button and pressing R2 while having the sensors over enemy craft locks onto them, allowing you to attack multiple targets at once. The directional pad shifts enegery between systems and the face buttons toggle between your various weapons. In no time, you'll be able to cruise between astroid belts, dodge space mines, and blow the shit out of enemy formations. There's 20 missions spread across all of the series (with Deep Space Nine only getting two missions :( ) and mission length is pretty decently long, so expect to spend upwards of 8-10 hours on this sucker.
The game is far from perfect, though. The narration by William Shatner is flat, emotionless, and painful to listen to. The missions sometimes feel needlessly drawn out (including the first mission where you have to fly through rings, bringing to mind terrible memories of Superman 64), and the difficulty is above normal

I'm midway through Star Trek The Original Series right now and I'm really enjoying blowing the shit out of the Klingons. :) I've heard some horror stories of the first Voyager mission though...so...we'll see :( It's really a shame this is a PS2-only game. It'd be the perfect impulse buy title on Steam if they marketed at ~$10 or so.
Here's a GoogleVideo showing some gameplay of the third mission in the "Star Trek - Enterprise" campaign:
